How to speed up Tableau Prep Builder

If you are working with large amount of Data in the Tableau Prep Builder, you have probably noticed that it is extremely slow. One way to speed up the Flow Run is to set the maximum amount of JAVA Heap Space that your computer can spare to the Table Prep Builder Process. Here is how to do that:

On MacOS:
  1. Open Terminal
  2. Launch Tableau Prep Builder using the following command:
    /Applications/Tableau\ Prep\ Builder\ 2019.4.app/Contents/MacOS/Tableau\ Prep\ Builder --java-options -Xmx16g
I used 16gb of Heap Size, you can adjust value to something your computer can handle.

On Windows:
  1. Open Command prompt (cmd.exe)
  2. Launch Tableau Prep Builder using the following command:
    "C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Prep Builder 2019.4\Tableau Prep Builder.exe" --java-options -Xmx16g
Again, I used 16gb of Heap Size, you can adjust value to something your computer can handle. Also use the correct version of the Tableau Prep Builder that you have installed instead of 2019.4

Moral of the story:
It is best to start the Tableau Prep Builder using the command line to specify appropriate amount of maximum heap size.
